In-Depth Information
If you have never seen Riverdance or heard the haunting tones of the bodhrans,
you've missed one of the most exciting music and dance shows in the last 1,000
years. Visit master bodhran maker Malachy Kearns's (known locally as Malachy
Bodhran) quaint craft and music shop. Malachy and artist-wife Anne are the only
full-time bodhran makers in the world, and they've been making them for many
years.
You can purchase the handmade bodhrans with Celtic designs, family crests,
or names. Hours: 0900-1900 daily (closed Sunday in winter). Malachy Kearns
mixes the goatskins with secret ingredients and soaks them for 7 to 10 days before
stretching them over a beech-wood frame. Mr. Kearns attributes the bodhran's
haunting tones to the goatskins; we think his secret ingredients have something to
do with achieving such extraordinary sound. It is truly fascinating!
