tels, and “self-catering” apartments and houses are available in Dun Laoghaire for
those who prefer to stay just outside of Dublin.
Other Dublin suburban areas within easy reach via DART, Suburban Rail, and
the Arrow lines include:
Bray, 30 minutes from Dublin, is where writer James Joyce and artist Neil Jordan
once lived and where rock star Bono of U2 makes his home. Connecting buses
can take you to the quaint little village of Enniskerry, with its delightful cafes, cof-
fee shops, and comfortable bed-and-breakfast facilities.
Howth, only 25 minutes from Connolly Station via DART, is a charming fishing vil-
lage on the northern side of Dublin Bay.
Naas, southwest of Dublin, can be reached by the Arrow train line departing from
Heuston Station. Naas is famous as a center for horse breeding, and race horse
owners from all over the world attend the October yearling sales held nearby.
Kildare, also famous with the equestrian set as a center for horse breeding and
home of the Irish National Stud, is only 48 kilometers away and is the last stop
on the Arrow line trains departing from Dublin's Heuston Station. For luxurious
resort-type accommodations (at resort-type prices, of course), the Kildare Hotel
and Country Club is top-notch. The transformation of the former fifth-century Straf-
fan mansion into a luxury hotel took more than two years to complete. The club-
house and 18-hole golf course were designed by Arnold Palmer.
