In-Depth Information
drivers speak English. Call them at (01) 211 1111 and tell the English-speaking op-
erator the telephone number you called from, and a taxi will arrive in just a few
minutes. Any “no-name” taxi is almost certainly a rip-off.
Keleti Station has all of the usual tourist services. For rail reservations, proceed
to the sign FOREIGN RAILWAY TICKETS—SEAT RESERVATIONS on your right when exiting
from the trains. Note that window 2 is for currency exchange, window 3 for hotels,
and window 6 is where you request tickets and seat reservations. Pay for all ser-
vices in cash (U.S. dollars; forints not accepted).
Deli (South) Station, a modern concrete edifice on the Buda side of the Danube,
features a huge supermarket on the ground level. Trains arrive overhead on un-
covered platforms that lead to a covered concourse, with an enclosed waiting room
and ticket office just beyond. The designation of Deli as Budapest's “south” station
is a bit confusing in that it actually lies to the west of the city. A visit to the super-
market is a must. The products and produce selections offered may be fewer than
those offered by even your local 7-Eleven store, but it's a great place to pick up the
local flavor and mix with the citizens.
The Metro Line 2 (or Red) terminates at the Deli Station, with direct connections
to the other two rail stations, Keleti and Nyugati. To access, follow the “M” picto-
graphs leading from the train level; same for taxis.
Nyugati (West) Station stands at the head of Terèz Boulevard just before Nyugati
Square. Nyugati Station has a Tourinform office as well as the usual amenities
found at Keleti and Deli.
