In-Depth Information
You will get a brief view of the Danube and the cathedral when crossing the rail-
road bridge entering Ulm. Watch on the right-hand side of the train immediately
after passing the Neu-Ulm (New Ulm) Station. The railroad bridge has a pedestrian
crossing, so you may want to return to that vantage point again for a more pro-
longed observation. The bridge can be reached after leaving the station by walking
to the right and following the railroad. Continue straight ahead, not turning with the
trolleys, on the promenade to the river's edge and the approach to the bridge.
Cross onto the bridge to stand on the federal state borderline separating Bavaria
and Baden-Württenberg right over the middle of the Danube.
Another route to the Danube is through the Fischerviertel (Fishermen's
Quarter), which lies to the south of the cathedral. En route, you will pass the pic-
turesque Schiefes Haus (Crooked House), which has settled over a canal. If you
walk downstream on the Danube's left bank, the river promenade will bring you to
the Metzgerturm (Butcher's Tower), another Ulm landmark. Walk on the ancient
city wall, and see the old traditional Ulm river boat—the Ulmer Schachtel —on
the other bank of the Danube. Walking to the city center from the Metzgerturm,
you'll reach the Rathaus (Town Hall) from 1370, famous for its opulent frescoes
