north and wend your way slowly through the Altstadt (Old Town), which lines both
sides of the street all the way to the Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof) at the end of
Herzog-Friedrich Strasse. Try your luck in the Casino, a tasty aperitif in the Piano
Bar, or a culinary feast in the Guggeryllis Restaurant. It may come as a disappoint-
ment, but the so-called Golden Roof is made of heavy, gilded copper.
Bus tours of the city are available throughout the year. A city tour by bus departs
the Central Bus Station daily at 1200 and 1400 June through September, free with
your Innsbruck Card, or €6. Biking tours are a great way to see Innsbruck, too. Or
take the 60-minute guided “City Walk” through the historic center of Innsbruck at
1100 and 1400; cost: €8.
We suggest you eat lunch in the Goldener Adler (Golden Eagle), the oldest inn
in the city, founded in 1390! It is around the corner on the left and can best be de-
scribed as a delicious experience. If you go there for dinner, enjoy Tyrolean music
in the cellar restaurant. It will complete a perfect evening, although an expensive
one. Another option is the Ottoburg, which is just past the Goldener Adler and
serves good traditional meals. Here is an insider's tip on where many locals eat
lunch: Try the Fischerhäusl, a cute little house with a garden located between the
cathedral and congress center.
Every year on August 15, the Austrian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra performs
in Innsbruck to celebrate the King of the Waltz—Johann Strauss—with the “hottest
Strauss event in Austria,” according to the 120 participating young musicians.
