Notes: Reach the information office by turning left outside the station and walking
downhill about 300 yards to Bahnhof Strasse. Turn left, and walk about 150 yards
to Richard Strauss Platz and the Kongresshaus (Congress Hall).
Bavaria's eccentric King Ludwig II spent lavishly, admired Wagner, and went
mad—though not necessarily in that order. Two of his famous castles, Neuschwan-
stein and Linderhof, can be visited on tours from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, as well
as the village of Oberammergau (home of the Passion Play) and the Zugspitze,
Germany's highest mountain.
DER, a German tour agency, offers a wide selection of tours in the Garmisch-
Partenkirchen area, including tours of King Ludwig's Neuschwanstein Castle and
his Linderhof Castle. The DER agency is immediately adjacent to the Garmisch-
Partenkirchen rail station.
