Munich's heart pulsates at the Marienplatz, the city's central square. From the
tower of the new town hall in the center of the Marienplatz, a glockenspiel chimes
every morning at 1100 and 1200 (again in summer at 1700) and is followed by a
performance of mechanical figures, including knights on horseback and a crowing
rooster. You will have to see it to believe it.
Dallmayr's Delicatessen is nearby—one of the finest delicatessens in the
world. Facing the glockenspiel, walk around the right side of the town hall to the
smaller square in the rear. Dallmayr's store will then be in plain view immedi-
ately across the street to your right, at 14-15 Dienerstrasse. Tel: [phone];
www.dallmayr.de . Hours: 0930-1900 Monday-Saturday, closed Sunday. Extravag-
ant beyond description, it demands to be seen. If for no other reason, go to Munich
to savor the sights and scents of Dallmayr's! A restaurant specializing in seafood
and a unique gift shop are on the second floor. This is not your usual “deli”; you'll
find rich German chocolates, caviar, lobster, fine wines—order a gourmet lunch “to
go.”
Munich has a great variety of things to see and do. There are approximately 100
historic buildings, two castles, 200 churches, 46 art collections and museums, and
58 performing theaters—all within the city limits and most of them within reason-
able walking distance from the Marienplatz. Ask the tourist information office for
the folder containing a city map showing the exact location of each of the points of
interest, including the 1972 Olympic Park, identified by color-coded squares. For
admirers of the brewmaster's art, the map also pinpoints 12 of Munich's most fam-
ous beer gardens.
The Hofbrauhaus (the state-owned beer hall) is a short walk from the Marien-
platz via Dallmayr's delicatessen. (It would be un-American not to stop!) The Hof-
brauhaus dates from 1589. It is no longer operated as a brewery, but beer is drayed
in to be consumed daily from 1-liter (1¾ pint) mugs while bands play lively tunes,
