Getting Around in Munich
Munich's fine S-Bahn (rapid train) system is operated by Deutsche Bahn (DB).
The German Railpass and the variety of Eurail passes that include Germany are
accepted for travel throughout the entire S-Bahn system. The aforementioned rail
passes are not accepted on the U-Bahn (underground or subway system) or on
the trams ( Strassenbahnen ).
The S-Bahn has eight main operating lines, S-1 through S-8. All of these lines
converge on the Marienplatz and Hauptbahnhof. You can obtain maps and fare in-
formation at the tourist information office. Visit www.mvv-muenchen.de .
A U-Bahn (subway) station is located directly under the plaza in front of the rail-
way station. The Munich Hauptbahnhof is the center of train, tram, bus, suburban
train, and subway services for the entire city.
A great value is the MVV-Single (valid for one person) or Partner (valid for two
adults) Tageskarte (Day Tickets). The Day Ticket provides unlimited travel on the
S-Bahn (rapid-transit line), U-Bahn (subway), streetcars, and buses on the date
of validation until 0600 the following day. A Single Day Ticket for Munich's entire
transport network costs €11.70; Partner Day Ticket, €21.30 (two adults). Remem-
ber to have your ticket “stamped/validated" by using any one of the machines near
and in any station.
All of Munich's public transportation operates on the honor system. You must
have a ticket for any conveyance you board, but you may not be asked to show
it—then again, you may. If you are apprehended without a valid ticket, you will be
fined €30 on the spot.
The CityTourCard is a great combination of city transport and sightseeing sav-
ings. It includes a day ticket for use on public transport in the MVV inner district
(Munich city area) or in the entire network (Gesamtnetz) and a discount card
that can be used at 30-plus tourist attractions (for example, Bavaria Filmstadt,
Deutsches Museum, BMW Museum, Sea Life, Komödie im Bayerischen Hof, and
much, much more). Visit www.citytourcard-muenchen.com for more details. Prices:
