In-Depth Information
Distance: 148 miles (233 km)
You will have about 20 minutes to change trains in Hannover. You will realize you
are approaching Hameln when you see the silhouette of the famous Piper on the
railroad control tower. If you plan to arrive in Hameln for the performance at noon
on Sunday, go directly to the town square.
Adjacent to the main tourist office at Deisterallee on the right is a beautiful park,
the Burgergarten. The park is readily identified by its pleasant green gate with
the silhouette of the Pied Piper. The tourist information office conducts one-hour
guided walking tours (in German) every day from April through October at 1500
(cost €4.00 per person). Ask the tourist office for prices of English-speaking tours.
You can even arrange for a tour with the Piper himself, including an autograph!
If you're making your own walking tour, turn right when leaving the tourist inform-
ation office and take the pedestrian underground route. Follow the signs reading
ALTSTADT (Old City). When you leave the underground passageway, you will be on
Osterstrasse. The Gaststatte Rattenfängerhaus (Pied Piper House), which is a
charming restaurant, will be to your immediate left. Either pause for refreshments
here or proceed on Osterstrasse to the town hall, situated at the end of the street
by the marketplace. En route, you will find several other attractive restaurants and
cafes.
The Pied Piper isn't Hameln's only attraction—sightseeing in the Altstadt alone
could fill your entire day. During the summer, it is possible to take a steamboat
trip on the Weser River or stroll through the extensive woods surrounding Hameln.
Visit Museum Hameln on Osterstrasse. Hours: 1100-1630 Tuesday-Sunday. Tel:
(05151) 202 1215; E-mail: museum@hameln.de; admission: Adults €5, under 13
€3. It contains an extensive collection of civic art and culture dating from the origins
of Hameln, including the Pied Piper legend.
You can observe the 2,000-year-old craft of glassblowing and engraving in the
historical Pulverturm (glassworks). The old and the new have been blended suc-
cessfully in Hameln.
