Bremen is Germany's oldest maritime city. Bremen got its start as a port city in the
10th century when Emperor Otto I approved the construction of its docks. It lies
on the Weser River, 44 miles upstream from the mouth. Bremen is the second-
largest port in Germany. With so much to see and do in Bremen, rail travelers vis-
iting Bremen for the first time may want to confine their sightseeing to the area in
and around the city's market square, then follow up with a second visit to the city's
extensive harbor facilities. Certainly the charm of the market and its immediate sur-
roundings will beckon the traveler to return again.
Finding your way from the Bremen railway station to the market square is an
easy task. Attendants there can give you a considerable amount of information
regarding Bremen. Particularly informative is a free brochure entitled Bremen,
Everything at a Glance . The brochure contains background information on all as-
pects of Bremen.

The most direct route to the market square is down Bahnhofstrasse, which be-
gins in front of the station. Proceed to where it intersects with Sogestrasse and
crosses a former moat. A landmark at this point is a large windmill, seen in the dis-
tance on the right when crossing the bridge. Proceeding 2 blocks straight ahead
on Sogestrasse brings you to the threshold of the old city center. A short walk
through a shopping area and you are in the market square, where the cathedral,
the Rathaus (city hall), and the Liebfrauenkirche are all clustered.
