The Church of Saint Nicholas, although containing some of the oldest building
remains in Leipzig, recently played an important part in the reunification of Ger-
many. From 1982, the prayers for peace held every Monday under the sheltering
roof of the church “transmitted” loud and clear signals to the Leipzig demonstrat-
ors—impulses that, during the days of October and November 1989, brought about
the “gentle revolution” that led to the downfall of the communist dictatorship.
Music lovers also will not want to miss the Mendelssohn House, where the in-
novative composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy lived and died. The Mendelssohn
House has been restored to its original grandeur. Visit www.mendelssohn-haus.de .
Outside Leipzig's old town you can visit the Leipzig Zoo, which was founded in
1878. Visit www.zoo-leipzig.de . The city information center will tell you it's “only a
15-minute walk,” but perhaps a taxi would be better. Opened in 2011 is a tropical
“Gondwanaland” area, with over 540 plant and animal species, and an option to
tour the area by boat. It includes a jungle landscape, tropical hall, and a research
camp for chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. The zoo is noted for its lions and
tigers, including the breeding of some 2,500 purebred Berber lions. An unusual
feature of the zoo is its “shop-window,” whereby spectators are separated from the
animals only by a moat—a deep moat.
From the rubble left at the end of World War II, the city constructed a stadium
seating 100,000 spectators. The stadium was the first major building project in
Leipzig following the war. Three million cubic meters of rubble were used for the
23-meter-high terraces. The stadium has been modernized to hold 45,000 covered
seats, and is now one of the premier soccer stadiums in Germany.
