Berlin, including its historic center, is once again easily accessible to visitors. The
infamous Checkpoint Charlie was dismantled. Its guardhouse is now a museum
piece. Except for a small section that will stand as a mute reminder, every vestige
of the Berlin Wall has been removed.
With the demise of the Wall, Berlin nearly doubled in size. The reunited metro-
polis rediscovered the traditional rhythm that made it famous throughout the world
and added some new ones. This city offers incredible nightlife and never sleeps
a wink. Hmm, did you pack your dancing shoes? Travelers from around the world
are passing the word, “Berlin is worth the trip.”
Arriving by Air
Tegel (TXL) and Schönefeld (SXL). Both airports are connected with the city center
by buses and trains. Visit www.berlin-airport.de . Plans are to expand the Schöne-
feld site into a new international airport, the Berlin Brandenburg International Air-
port (BBI). Construction began in mid-2006 and is expected to be completed in late
2016. Tegal is expected to close in 2016, following the October 2008 closure of
the old Tempelhof Airport. BBI's rail station will be under the terminal and provide
20-minute access to Berlin's city center.
Tegel Airport, 5 miles northwest, is your most likely arrival airport. Exiting from
Customs, you'll see an information office between two rows of ticket counters.
Go there for transportation information. From that position, look over your right
shoulder and you will see the money-exchange office across the hall; open daily
0600 to 2200. ATMs are available near Gates 4, 10/11, and 15 and in the “Reise-
markt.”
Airport-City Links: TXL ExpressBus Nos. 128, 109, and X9 run to under-
ground stations in Berlin, for connections to the city's underground, S-Bahn
train, and bus network, at Jungfernheide, one stop from Jakob Kaizer Platz on
the U7 line. A service also runs to city center destinations, including Unter den
Linten and Französische Strasse, with connections to the U9 underground train
at Turmstrasse, and ending at Alexanderplatz. Information is available from the
BVG office in the main hall of the terminal [ Tel: (0)30 19449]. Taxis are readily
available outside the terminal. Journey time: 30 to 40 minutes. Fare: €25 to €35,
depending on traffic.
Schönefeld Airport is served by many European airlines; you should check with
the airline taking you into Berlin as to its landing airport. Schönefeld will become
