Chartres is bountiful in its art and has many museums and galleries to enjoy,
such as the International Stained Glass Center, La Maison de l'Archeologie,
and the MaisonPicassiette, as well as the NaturalHistoryMuseum, the regional
School Museum, and the Agriculture Museum (COMPA).
To see all of the city's attractions, hop aboard Le petit Chart' train (The little
train of Chartres). From April through October, the “train” departs daily on the hour
from in front of the cathedral on a 35-minute tour of “Old Chartres.” The first de-
parture is at 1030; the last departure is at 1800. Adults, €6.50; children, €3.50. All
aboard!

Notes: To reach the palace from the railway station in Fontainebleau, take the No.
1 bus marked Château from the station to the palace. The ride takes 10 minutes.
No admission charge to palace grounds. Admission to palace: €10 adults, free for
children younger than age 18.
The Palace of Fontainebleau is most famous today as the residence of Napoleon
Bonaparte, but the site attracted the presence of the kings of France and other roy-
alty as far back in history as the 12th century. For many, Fontainebleau signifies
the spirit of France more so than does Versailles.
In 1169 Louis VII had the chapel of his manor at Fontainebleau consecrated
by Thomas à Becket, the famous English archbishop of Canterbury. The palace
