Without doubt,
it is the most elegant restaurant of any train station in the world. Opened in
1901, it was originally called the
Buffet de la Gare de Lyon.
Quickly, however,
it became the fashionable place for well-heeled passengers to partake of a
late supper prior to boarding
Le Train Bleu
, the stylish sleeper that traveled
between Paris and the French Riviera, and so it was renamed.
The food is good, and the decor is France at the beginning of the 20th cen-
tury at its opulent best: crystal chandeliers, shimmering brass, and mahogany.

Other major railway stations in Paris include
Gare Saint Lazare
(north and west
of France) and
Gare Montparnasse
(west of France). There are four Métro sta-
tions (Routes 4, 6, 12, and 14) in or adjacent to the Montparnasse railway station.
Consequently, it is easy to reach from other parts of the rail network. Route 4 con-
nects directly with Gare du Nord (North Station) and Gare de l'Est (East Station).
Trains departing Paris for Chartres from Montparnasse also stop in Versailles, but
this station is some distance from the Palace of Versailles and should not be used
for that day excursion.
In these railway stations the
reservation offices
are open 0800 to 2000 daily.
