The Principality of Monaco lies 4,092 miles east of Philadelphia—two cities inex-
orably linked by the memories of their princess, Grace Patricia Kelly, who died as
the result of a tragic accident in 1982. Monaco consists of 0.7 square mile (453
acres) of rocky coastline along the Riviera. It has been ruled by members of the
Grimaldi family for the past 10 centuries. Its famous gambling casino is located in
Monte Carlo, one of four sections that make up the principality. The other three are
Monaco-Ville itself (the capital and site of the palace), La Condamine (a commer-
cial and residential area), and Fontvieille (a residential and light-industries section).
Monaco operates a highly efficient bus system consisting of five major lines: No.
1 (Red), No. 2 (Blue), No. 4 (Gold), No. 5 (Brown), and No. 6 (Green), which serves
the Fontvieille-Larvotto (beach) area. These are augmented by Line No. 3, serving
the beach area during the summer.
