Nice, “the gateway to southern Europe,” has changed more in 50 years than it did
over the past two centuries. According to Nice's Convention and Visitors' Bureau,
Nice's “history advances, but its past remains.”
In the days before World War I, the Riviera was a haven for rich Russian dukes
and English lords seeking escape from the rigors of a more northerly winter. When
such aristocracy, particularly the Russian version, began to fade from the scene,
summer became the popular season, bringing with it hordes of Americans and oth-
ers seeking the sun and all sorts of fun, including the nocturnal varieties.
The Riviera began to change. Towns and fishing villages that earlier visitors knew
have grown together into an almost continuous resort town stretching from Saint-
Raphaël to the Italian border. Nice, the largest community in the area, lies about
halfway between these two points and is our base city for numerous day excur-
sions in either direction. However, because of the relatively short distances between
points and excellent rail service, one could select any one of the day excursions
(Cannes, Monte Carlo, or Saint-Raphaël) as a base city.

farther into the international terminal, Terminal 1. Terminal 2 is for
flights within France. If you are not certain of your transportation mode to your final
destination, inquire at the airport's information desk or at one of the airline counters
inside.

An
airport bus
and
limousine service
are available
between the airport and the Nice Ville railway station. Bus fare: €6; departs every
20 minutes. Journey time is about 20 minutes. Connections can be made in the
front-left section of the airport building as you exit.
