In-Depth Information
The picturesque medieval appeal of Annecy stems from both the French and
Italian civilizations as a result of having changed sides several times during its
more than 2,000-year existence. The area became a part of the French empire in
1792, although it reverted to the Italian Kingdom of Sardinia in 1815. It was not un-
til 1860 that all of Savoy, where Annecy is situated, was again reunited with France
as a reward to the French for helping Italy in its war with Austria.
Annecy slipped quietly into the 20th century with the introduction of TGV train
service directly from Paris. The distance from the Gare de Lyon Station in Paris
to Annecy is covered in about 3¾ hours—a trip that formerly consumed at least 8
hours. Currently, there are four trains daily that depart in the morning, making the
possibility of a day excursion to Annecy from Paris a reality.
Departing Paris Gare de Lyon Station on TGV 6931 at 0645, you would arrive
in Annecy at 1030; boarding TGV 6984 departing Annecy at 1831, you would be
back in Paris by 2213 (does not run on Sunday). It's a full day but a fun-packed
one, too.
