In-Depth Information
In Tampere you can find a good cross section of Finnish architectural history. It
ranges from charming wooden houses and Art Nouveau houses in the center of
the city to the most modern designed office buildings and redbrick factory build-
ings at the city's rapids. Tampere's oldest building is the Messukylastonechurch,
which dates from the 15th century. The city's cathedral, with its architecture and
frescoes, is an outstanding example of Finland's Art Nouveau period. A newer
place of worship is the KalevaChurch, a strikingly modern construction completed
in 1966. Another fine example of modern Finnish architecture is the city's main
library, the City Library Metso. The Moomin-Valley Museum, in the same build-
ing, is also worth a visit. The Moomin collection includes more than 1,000 fairy-tale
sketches and illustrations by the author-artist Tove Jansson and can be enjoyed by
all ages. If you are interested in architectural design, Tampere can come up with a
good serving of it.
In the center of Tampere, there is the Verkaranta Arts and Crafts Center, with
Finnish articles of high quality on exhibition. Close by, you can browse about in
