Municipal Art Gallery [ Tel: (019) 2203 270], which features exhibitions from local,
Finnish, and foreign artists.
To experience Hanko's spa history, visit the famous Summer Restaurant
Casino, one of the largest summer restaurants in Finland. To get there, head down
Bulevardi toward the sea. Turn left onto Appelgrenintie. As you enter the Spa Park,
you will see the beaches on your right. The villas in the park once housed Russian
nobles and their families as guests.
Hanko has several other interesting restaurants, some of which are open year-
round in the Eastern Harbor area. You can find Italian-style entrees, seafood, or
homemade Finnish fare.
Other tours of Hanko and its surroundings can be arranged through the City
Tourist Office. Brochures, maps, and special information leaflets are available;
guides can be hired. Sea cruises operate every day from mid-June to the end
of August. You can visit the highest lighthouse in the Nordic countries by a
tour to Bengtskär [six to seven hours; Tel: (02) 466 7227; Fax: (02) 466 7228;
www.bengtskar.fi ] or take a shorter trip to Pike's Gut (Hauensuoli), the “Guest
Book of the Archipelago.” This is a narrow strait between two islands, Tullisari and
Kobben. Sea tours start at the Eastern Harbor. Tickets are sold onboard. Fishing
trips may also be arranged, but before angling off, check with the tourist office and
obtain a general fishing permit from the town's post office. Hanko is packed with
exciting as well as relaxing things to do.
