cobblestone streets, is very attractive.
If you are visiting the museum area at mealtime, we suggest that you eat in a
charming little restaurant nearby at Overgade 23, Den Gamle Kro (“The Old Inn”).

The house of Hans Christian Andersen is not the only attraction in Odense. With
more than 185,000 inhabitants, the city is Denmark's third largest. Industrial and
vigorous in its lifestyle, Odense has smart shops, spacious parks, and sparkling
residential areas. Situated in the center of Denmark's second-largest island, the
Isle of Funen, the city is the focal point for those wishing to explore the island's
rolling countryside.

At least two trains depart København H. hourly at 28 and 50 minutes after the hour;
journey time on IC trains is 1 hour 27 to 32 minutes (a few minutes faster Sa-Su).
Lyntog trains (departing at 0650, 0750, and 0850) take only 1 hour 16 minutes.
At least two trains depart Odense hourly at 07 and 46 minutes after the hour; jour-
ney time for IC trains is 1 hour 33 minutes. Lyntog trains (departing at 07 minutes
after the hour) take 1 hour 18 minutes.
Note: Seat reservations are recommended on all IC and Lyntog trains in Denmark.
Passengers may board the train without a reservation but are not guaranteed a
seat.

The German emperor Otto III officially mentioned Odense for the first time in a
letter dated March 18, 988. Although there were people living there at the time and
a church had been previously erected, the present-day residents applied the em-
peror's date as a benchmark and declared 1988 as the “1,000th Anniversary of
Odense.”
A Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale is presented from mid-July through the first
week in August at the Open Air Theater in Funen Village. The village is one of
