between the castle and the marketplace from May 15 through September 15 (DKK

The castle actually spans three islands. The first of its structures, erected by Fre-
derik II in 1560, occupied the largest island. The balance of this imposing castle
complex was built by Christian IV between 1600 and 1620. Between 1570 and
1840, Danish monarchs were anointed in the castle chapel, and it was used for
the wedding of Danish Prince Joachim and Alexandra Manley from Hong Kong in
1995.
In 1859 a disastrous fire destroyed the interior of the main building, and irre-
placeable treasures were lost forever. The chapel and all of its valuable contents,
however, remained relatively undamaged. Among those items was the celebrated
chapel organ built by Esaias Compenius in 1610. The chapel organist plays
every Thursday between 1330 and 1400. The castle has been restored, at first
by royal contributions and public donations, and, more recently, by philanthropic
support from J. C. Jacobsen, former owner of the Carlsberg Brewery and the
Carlsberg Foundation. Hours: April-October: 1000-1700 daily; November-March:
1100-1500 daily (admission: DKK 75, adults; DKK 20, children;

history, known as the North Sealand Folk Museum, by a small pond in a corner
of the castle's gardens, and the castle itself now houses the Museum of Natural
History.
The castle gardens, water canals, and fountains are among the most exquisite.
In 1996 the reconstruction of the Baroque Garden was finished and inaugurated
by Danish Queen Margrethe II; it resembles the original park from 1720. In another
section of the castle garden, known as the Indelukket , you can inspect a charming
little country house built in 1562 for the king to conduct informal entertainment.

veniently located on Slotsgade. When you are coming from the railway station, the
glass-covered Slots Arkaderne shopping mall is on the left-hand side of Slotsgade.
The Money Historical Museum, at No. 38 Slotsgade, is on your way to the
castle. It should attract coin collectors of all ages as it comprises a very fine col-
lection of Danish and foreign coins as well as other means of payment used in an-
cient times. Illustrations tell the story of political, historical, and cultural aspects of
money and coinage.
