While admiring the Great Hall, you'll probably note that there are no fireplaces
or other heating devices. Apparently, they were overlooked by the royal architect.
This created no problem for the royal occupants, however, when they wanted to
lay on a royal midwinter bash; they merely marched several thousand men of the
royal guard into the area, and the troops' body heat sent the mercury soaring.
While in Helsingør, make certain that a part of your tour includes a stop at the
Raadhus (town hall). In its council chamber, you can see a stained-glass window
that depicts the history of the town. Outside of the town hall you will see a narrow
street (Brostraede) leading to the sea. Follow it. The ice-cream shop is there.
Copenhagen (København)—Helsingør (Elsinore)
From Copenhagen to Helsingør:
Trains depart daily every 20 minutes at 12, 32, and 52 minutes past the hour
0512-1932. Journey time is approximately 49 minutes. Check with the train inform-
ation office in the København H. Station.
From Helsingør to Copenhagen:
Trains depart daily every 20 minutes at 03, 23, and 43 minutes past the hour,
0543-1943; additional Trains until 2245. Check with the train information office in
the Helsingør train station.
Ferries between Helsingør, Denmark, and Helsingborg, Sweden:
Copenhagen-Helsingør trains connect with ferries to Sweden on Scandlines.
Eurail pass is accepted for passage. Several ferries depart every 20 minutes be-
ginning at 0640 until 2140, with less frequent service outside of these hours. Ser-
vice in either direction takes about 20 minutes. If desired, you may combine a day
excursion to Helsingør, Denmark, with a round-trip ferry crossing to Helsingborg,
Sweden. Return trips are similar, beginning at 0600 and returning until 2330.
