Day Excursions
Five delightful day excursions await whenever you can break away from the charm
that is distinctly Copenhagen's. Admittedly, this is a difficult thing to do because the
Danish capital has so much to offer, what with its Tivoli Gardens and pedestrian-
only shopping streets; but leave it you must. The entire country is a fairyland. Go
out and enjoy it.
Jutland is the Danish mainland, the tip of the European continent that reaches
northward toward the Scandinavian peninsula. Aarhus is Jutland's cultural center
and Denmark's second-largest city. Fans of William Shakespeare will, no doubt,
make Helsingør (Elsinore) their prime day-excursion choice. Castle buffs will head
for Hillerød and its gracious Frederiksborg Castle. Odense, birthplace of Hans
Christian Andersen, will delight day excursioners of all ages. Roskilde is loaded
with Danish folklore and history, including a Viking-ship museum, Museum Island,
and Denmark's most important medieval building—the Roskilde Cathedral—for
centuries the final resting place of Denmark's royalty.
