The New Museum of Modern Art Arken (the Ark) is a favorite among those
interested in contemporary art ( www.arken.dk ) . The building itself is a fascinating
structure. Open Tuesday-Sunday, 1000-1700, until 2100 on Wednesday. Prices:
adults DKK 95, under 17 free.
Year-round, visit Den Lille Havfrue (“The Little Mermaid”), symbol of today's
Copenhagen. It is an enchanting, soul-touching statue, and next to Queen Mar-
grethe it is probably Denmark's most famous female.
Shopping? Copenhagen can accommodate you. You'll learn quickly about Stro-
get (pronounced “stroy-it”). It's not one but actually five different shopping areas,
each designated pedestrian-only and lined with shops that might make you want
to hide your credit cards. All the well-known Danish specialties are in profusion
here. Just north of the Stroget in the Latin Quarter there are some good cafes and
restaurants, so you can get anything from a hot dog to a five-course banquet. Try
the world-famous Danish delicacy smorrebrod , which usually consists of rye bread
topped with marinated herring or liver pâté and onion rings.
