A great convenience is the Copenhagen Card, which entitles you to unlimited
travel by buses and trains in the entire metropolitan area, plus free entrances to
more than 65 museums, attractions, and sights, including Tivoli and Tivoli Mu-
seum, Believe It or Not!, Danish Toy Museum, Frederiksborg Castle, and many
more. A comprehensive guide booklet accompanies the card and includes a city
map; 72-hour card: €75 adults; €34 children age 10 to 15; 24-hour card: €42 adults;
€23 children. Up to two children under age 10 are allowed free with each adult
card. Purchase at tourist offices or online.
Copenhagen has invested heavily in putting bicycle paths alongside many of
its main streets, and the city provides more than 1,300 free bicycles for visitors
to use while sightseeing. Look for one of the 125 Citybike parking areas located
throughout the city center, deposit a DKK 20 coin, and start pedaling. When you
return the bike, you get your money back. Check with the tourist office for more
details.
Sights/Attractions/Tours
Tivoli Gardens ( Tel: 33 15 10 01; Fax: 33 75 03 81; www.tivoli.dk ) is generally
open from mid-April through mid-September. Hours: 1100-2300
Sunday-Thursday, 1100-2400 Friday and Saturday. Check the Tivoli website for
special Christmas Market dates and opening hours. It's not the world's largest
amusement park, but it is unique. It has been in business since 1843. Each year,
people come from all over the world to enjoy its very special blend of old and new
attractions. Tree-lined walks, resplendent with flowers and sparkling illuminations,
form the backdrop to its theaters and open-air amusement areas. Four evenings
each week, the park closes with a fireworks display.
During its day of entertainment for young and old alike, international artists ap-
pear at the Tivoli Concert Hall, Gilbert & Sullivan scenarios are acted out at the
Pantomime Theater, and the Tivoli Boys Guard parades frequently to the delight
of all. There's also an impressive assembly of quality rides to thrill you, games to
play, and more than 30 eating establishments to select from. Tivoli must be exper-
ienced. Prices: adults DKK 99; children under 7 free.
Amalienborg Palace is a beautiful example of Rococo architecture and has
served as the permanent residence of the Danish royal family since 1794. See the
changing of the Royal Guard at 1200 every day in the palace square.
Tour the colorful Nyhavncanal area with its quaint restaurants and cafes or take
the city harbor tour—a comfortable way to see beautiful Copenhagen.
