A signal labeled Enable Calculations will begin the addition. Addition using
controlled toggles belongs to the field of reversible computing and is explained in a
later chapter.
Controlled toggles are carried out under codes stored in a block of long-term
memory. These codes apply to each toggle register in parallel in order to compute a
priority for each register in parallel.
To begin, the Enable Calculations signal which is a single pulse will ripple
through code memory. When it reaches a word filled with code, it applies the code
to the toggle registers. In this way each code is applied sequentially to the toggle
registers where the calculations are being accomplished in parallel, piece by piece.
Finally the priorities, P in number, are ready, and are compared in a Priority
Comparator. The highest priority image is subsequently gated into consciousness.
