In-Depth Information
Draw a condensed representation that shows the important structural information.
C When you draw a structure in condensed form, you can use shorthand for parts of
it and not others. This depends on exactly what you need the structure to show. For
example, you might have drawn:
This condensed structure has a combination of bond lines and contracted group
forms. All the functional groups are clearly shown, but there is no detail of molecular
shape. In particular, this drawing does not show the geometry of the alkene C ] C.
This geometry can be very important for the identity of the molecule. There are many
ways of drawing this mixed condensed form.
The most contracted form is the bond line structural diagram. In this form, both carbon
and hydrogen atom labels are not shown. Instead they are shown as bends in the
bond chain. Each bend is a carbon with the correct number of hydrogens to fill its
valency. All other heteroatoms and attached hydrogen atoms are labeled.
Try to draw a bond line representation for the molecule.
