QUESTIONS AND PROGRAMS
Q 6.1. Mark each of the following species as an acid and/or base. Then draw
the conjugate acid or conjugate base for each.
Q 6.2. Write the following as proton transfer reactions. Use curly arrows to
show electron flow, and label the acids, bases, and their conjugates.

PROGRAM 16 Acid-Base Reactivity
A With strong mineral acids, complete ionization in water can be shown as:
Organic compounds are weak acids or bases, and are only slightly ionized. This is
better shown as an equilibrium. The relative strengths of the acid, base, and their
conjugates control the position of the equilibrium.
Write down and describe the two equilibrium positions that could exist.
