tions of (developed and developing) states, international organisations
and all kinds of hybrids that seem to emerge in-between state, market
and civil society? Only by working on such questions environmen-
tal social scientists show that - in contrast to the fears of Scott Lash
( 2002 )-it is possible to reflect on and interpret the new signs of our
times and seek to contribute to democratic and effective environmental
governance modes that fit the current social constellations.
