than required to maintain both short- and long-term food security. A
further consequence of this was that the outfield was overexploited and
reduced the longevity of the traditional land management systems. Social
explanations for the continuation of land management practices limited
in their sustainability include the short-term land tenure system, and
insufficient cultural knowledge of long-term cultural landscape change.
