Sergiev Posad was the centre of matryoshka production before the revolution.

Right by the monastery walls, Gostevaya Izba ( GOOGLE MAP ; Aptekarsky per;
R300-500; 11am-11pm) re-creates the kind of food metropolitans of the past would
gorge on outside fasting periods, although - to the delight of vegetarians - the
menu has a considerable fasting section, too. For salads, pastas and a couple of
vegetarian options, try little Art Café San Marino (pr Krasnoy Armii 138/2; mains
R250-400; 11am-midnight) . Looking utterly unorthodox in such close proximity to
the holy site, this little cellar is filled with art and books.
