In the mouse, Ly49 receptors are type II membrane-anchored glycoproteins
that bind different MHC class I H-2 alleles. Although structurally different,
mouse Ly49s functionally resemble human KIRs in that both are involved in
the acquisition of tolerance to cells expressing self-MHC class I. The struc-
