4.10 Applicability in Factories and in Buildings
A site's demand of both electricity and thermal energy is often satisfied by means of
utility plants and related distribution lines. Generally, no alternative source of
thermal energy is available. On the other hand, electric energy can be produced
on site from either traditional fuels or refuse-derived fuels.
Cogeneration and trigeneration plants and waste-recovery plants seem to be the
most attractive means of reducing primary energy consumption and the cost of the
energy supply, but the capital and operating costs must be investigated together
with technical aspects such as the quality, reliability, and flexibility of the energy
production.
Renewable sources can provide significant support only in particular conditions.
Nevertheless, energy management programs must always verify these possibilities.
