Central Pest
M OST VISITORS TO BUDAPEST head straight for this area, known as
Belváros or the Inner City. It is the city's commercial hub, and is illed
with ine buildings, shops and cafés. However, the area lay in ruins at the
end of the 17th century, and was only redeveloped in the 19th century when
many of Pest's most important buildings were built, including
the Hungarian National Museum. Today, many of the streets
and squares are entirely pedestrianized, making it an
ideal place for walking, shopping and dining outdoors. In
fact, during the summer, the southern end of Váci utca
becomes a never-ending mêlée of cafés and pubs, with
revellers drinking on the pavement from dawn to dusk.
