If the splendour of Empire and
the Secession become too much
for you, head for this museum
for a bewildering display of mod-
ern Hungarian art. More than
150 works from 1960 onwards
document the progression of
Hungarian artists as they attempt-
ed to break out of Socialist
Realism. There are also a num-
ber of works by international
contemporary artists.

Uniforms, lags, maps, weapons
and photographs document the
many battles that have been
fought over Budapest. The muse-
um is especially effective when it
tells the story of the 1956
National Uprising, and of the
many Hungarians who subse-
quently lost their lives in the
repression that followed.

Born Győző Vásárhelyi,
Victor Vasarely carved himself a
place in art history as the founder
of the Op-Art movement in Paris
in the 1930s. A museum ded-
icated to his life and work,
featuring almost 500 pieces, is
based in Zichy Palace in Óbuda.
