Database Reference
In-Depth Information
12.6 Summary
his chapter covers management-related issues. Security is the top concern for the databases and
applications deployed to a cloud environment. his chapter addresses the issues related to coni-
dentiality, integrity, and availability in the cloud environment. he cloud environment makes it
easy for database management. Cloud providers take care of the management of infrastructure,
security, database backup, and replication. In the cloud environment, the database administrator
can focus on the management of the database itself, such as user authentication and authorization.
For the management of Windows Azure, the Windows Azure Management Portal and Windows
Azure Service Management API are the tools that can accomplish tasks such as the management
of storage accounts, cloud services, certiicates, and ainity groups. To observe databases and
applications running on Windows Azure, we can use Windows Azure Diagnostics, which is a pro-
gramming-based tool that supports monitoring functionalities. he Windows Azure Management
Portal also provides tools to help monitor and analyze operations. To demonstrate how to manage
databases and applications in Windows Azure, four hands-on activities are provided. hese activi-
ties cover the management of database users, storage accounts, as well as service monitoring.
