10.1 Introduction
Traditionally, the development of database systems has been done in the Windows server envi-
ronment. Microsoft SQL Server has been used to create and manage databases. Microsoft Visual
Studio provides various tools to develop applications. Windows Server has been used to host
databases and applications. It provides security protection and allows remote access. Similar to the
Windows Server platform, Windows Azure also provides the environment where IT professionals
can develop and manage databases and applications. herefore, IT professionals who are familiar
with the Windows development environment will have no diiculty working in the Windows
Azure development environment. he database design tools, database application software, and
database management utilities are about the same between SQL Server and Windows Azure SQL
Database. IT professionals can continue to use the theory and skills used in the Windows Server
development environment. he diference is that Windows Azure is a cloud-based application
development environment. Unlike the Windows Server development environment, it is not neces-
sary to develop an IT infrastructure to support the development environment. here is no initial
labor cost spent on IT infrastructure development and management. However, users need to pay
monthly for the storage and server usage on Windows Azure. Windows Azure provides a highly
available development environment. Developers can work on their projects from anywhere and
