2.4 Water supply, sewerage and drainage systems
The city of Harare is supplied with water mainly through abstractions from the lakes
Chivero and Manyame. After a conventional treatment at Morton Jeffrey water treatment
plant, the water is directed to several reservoirs and distributed to the residents. The
Prince Edward water treatment plant provides a relatively low percentage of the total
demand. The city's formal residential areas are provided with treated reticulated water.
The informal settlements, which have emerged due to the rapid increase of population in
the last decades, are not provided with safe water, as described in Chapter 6.
