with basic sanitary facilities, and their liquid and solid wastes are discharged straight into
the river or its tributaries. The settlements have been developed along the riverbanks, in
most places not more than 500 m away from the rivers, and this is understandable,
considering the lack of basic water supply structures. The most notable ones are Likuni
and Chinsapo settlements. These areas are heavily populated with much of the housing
being unplanned.
Further downstream of Dam II, on the eastern riverbanks Katete livestock farm is
located, with the land sloping towards the river. There used to be a good ground cover
because of the forest in the 100 m-buffer zone to the river, but it is no longer there, due to
deforestation. This area also has a few village settlements that are located very close to
the river. The western side is an area that is developing fast with unplanned
