In-Depth Information
A clay layer should routinely be put at the base of graves before burial to filter the
leachate before it enters the groundwater. This is because clay materials retard bacterial
movement.
The local groundwater can only be used to water lawns at the cemetery since the
aquifer is already polluted.
4 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
4.1 Golden Quarry solid waste disposal site
The site is a source of groundwater pollution, with levels of metals, nitrates and
coliform bacteria all elevated. The source of the metals (except iron, which is naturally
high) is likely to be from the disposal of industrial waste on the south side of the
landfill. The high metal levels attenuate rapidly downflow.
Coliform bacteria and nitrate are probably leachate from the disposal of domestic
refuse on the north side of the landfill.
The responsible authority should undertake mitigatory measures to decrease the
environmental impact of the landfill. These could include treating the landfill with
gypsum and iron (III) minerals, revegetating the landfill surface, planting more gun
trees downflow of the landfill and grouting the landfill's western edge.
4.2 Granville Cemetery
The site is a source of groundwater pollution, with levels of some metals, nitrates,
phosphate andcoliform bacteria all elevated.
