An innovative response to mitigating organic contamination from landfills has been
suggested by Kennedy and Everett (2001). It involves the adding of gypsum and iron (III)
minerals, such as pyrrhotite, to a landfill. This approach was also shown to decrease
releases of toxic gases, such as methane. Such minerals are readily available from
industrial waste dumps within the city of Harare, such as Zimphos (Ravengai & Love
2004) and from a number of mines within a 50 km radius of Harare, such as Arcturus
