At Granville, seven boreholes were sited and drilled using a Vonder Rig, up to a
maximum depth of 10 m. These boreholes were sited in and around the graves (Fig. 7.6).

GBH10) were pre-existing, now property of the city Council but originally installed by
the owner of Granville Estate.
A control borehole was chosen from the pre-existing boreholes upslope of and far
from the influence of the cemetery in the same geological unit. The new boreholes, with
depths ranging between 2.5 m and 7.6 m, were all drilled using a Vonder Rig, and cased
as described in Chapter 6.
2.2 Sampling and chemical analysis
For both sites, samples were collected for microbiology, physical parameter and chemical
parameter analysis. Water samples were collected using glass-sampling bottles sterilized
by autoclaving prior to sampling. All the tests carried out were according to standard
