In-Depth Information
'B' are 2.2 × 0.8 m for adults and 1 × 0.5 m for infants in size and have varying depth
according to the type of burial (Table 7.1). The depth of the graves is dependent on the
anticipated number of coffins and the graveyard section as shown on Table 7.1.
This study focuses on Granville “B”. Most of the burials in Granville B are with cheap
coffins made of soft wood either covered by black cloth or varnished. In the pauper
section (Fig. 7.7) burial is for 3 corpses per grave in separate coffins. Since burials started
in 1999, the cemetery section has expanded eastwards (Fig. 7.8).

2 METHODOLOGY
2.1 Location and drilling of boreholes
At Golden Quarry, nine boreholes were used for groundwater sampling, including a
control, located far from the landfill but in the same geological unit (see Fig. 7.2). The
boreholes, drilled under a SIDA-SAREC project in the late 1990s, were all drilled using a
Vonder Rig, up to a maximum depth of 7.6 m, and cased as described in Chapter 6.
