Domestic and commercial waste disposal was concentrated on the northern side of the
landfill, and industrial waste on the southern side.
1.5 Cemetery study area
Granville Cemetery is located about 15 km from the Harare city center along the Beatrice
road south of the city (Fig. 7.1.). Granville Cemetery was selected for study because it is
the largest cemetery in Harare and since it receives the vast majority of the city's burials.
Granville lies in the Harare granites, which are coarse-grained, massive and weathers
to give rise to sandy soils (Baldock et al . 1991). The cemetery is in a topographic low,
and the water table is high, reaching the surface and causing waterlogging during the
rainy season. Shallow groundwater in the area flows southwestwards, into farmland, and
feeds a tributary of the Mukuvisi River, which in turn flows into Lake Chivero, Harare's
main water source.
Burial at Granville Cemetery started in 1995 and is divided into three sections, 'A',
'B' and a pauper section (Fig. 7.5). 'A' section has the expensive and concreted graves
