groundwater flows from a high at the dumpsite, westwards under Westlea suburb,
towards a tributary of the Marimba River (Fig. 7.2). The Marimba River flows into Lake
Chivero, Harare's main water source. Some Westlea residents extract shallow
groundwater, especially for urban agriculture, but also for limited domestic uses, such as
washing.
Dumping at Golden Quarry started in 1985 on an abandoned gold mine, located in
banded ironstone (Baldock et al

1991). Operation of the site as been hampered from time
to time by problems such as a shortage of compacting equipment (Tevera 1991) and
