• Urban informal agriculture - This practice has spread widely during the last twenty
years and consists of the informal and unauthorized use of open spaces within the
municipal area, for the purpose of small-scale farming activities, predominantly maize
growth, which would complement the family budget. The farming depends entirely on
rainfall. The need of water for irrigation purposes makes the stream banks preferred
places for informal agriculture and at suitable locations they are occupied first. The
preferred crops consist of a variety of traditional vegetables, maize and potatoes.
