Human activities in the valley may explain these fea-
tures, but two interpretations are possible (Figure 14.6):
channels. The valley bottom was then a single broad
level. Evidence for this interpretation comes from
the lower valley, where some of the abandoned
channels are too narrow and shallow to have con-
veyed the mean discharge, and several channels
could easily have formed in the highly erodible
