In-Depth Information
Self-catering apartments near the Vatican are designed for religious types, so
expect a somewhat plainer decor with a crucifix on the wall and a Bible on the
table. It's a newer neighborhood—white marble will usually replace the quaint
terra cotta found in Trastevere and the historical center. On the plus side, though,
these apartments are generally larger (and you may even score air-conditioning).
In the neighborhoods between these two, expect a blend of elements. All self-
catering apartments have weekly linen service, kitchens, bathrooms, and sleeping
quarters, and the best have balconies and extras like airport pickup and drop-off.
The only real way to book an apartment for the first time is through an agency,
which generally charges a small commission, included in the prices listed. On
future visits you can always call the landlord directly, but even then some will
insist you use an agency as a go-between.
The best way to search the listings is via the Internet so that you can see pho-
tos. Rome Accom (www.rome-accom.com) has a vast selection of good apartments
in the center of Rome, many of which start as low as €100 a night. The staff will
arrange for airport pickup and drop-off as well. This agency is selective about
what properties it lists and will even act as an intermediary between you and the
landlord once you are in Rome.
