ACCOMMODATIONS, BOTH STANDARD & NOT
Florence has over 1,000 registered places to stay, not including an equal number
of unofficial apartment and room rentals, so there really is something for every-
one here. Recently, many of the semi-legal private-room rentals and bed-and-
breakfasts have been forced to register with authorities, creating a visible glut of
rooms. All the hoteliers I interviewed have complained of a slow tourism market
and high vacancy rates. Such market factors should give you increased bargaining
power for rooms, though standard offered rates have not dropped to date. Many
owners have been upgrading their facilities to justify keeping the same level of
rates, giving visitors a better experience than in years past.
Christmas, Easter, and occasional trade shows make for tighter times in book-
ing rooms. A number of smaller hotels and B&Bs close for a couple of weeks in
August as well, making it a little tougher to find lodging during this period.
