In-Depth Information
Some N-fixing species are free-living in the soil and other terrestrial environments,
including certain bacteria within the genera Clostridium, Azotobacter, Beijerinckia
and several tens of bacterial species from other genera. Members of a range of groups
within the Eubacteria form ecologically - and agronomically - important symbiotic
associations with fungi and other organisms within the plant kingdom (Table IV.10).
They derive their energy from carbohydrates formed through photosynthesis, and
provide their associates with significant amounts of nitrogen.
